STONE
Stećci are medieval tombstones scattered throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, and Serbia. They are common grave markers of plural societies in the Western Balkans' Late Medieval and early Ottoman period (12th–16th C), preserved in situ in their tens of thousands.
Although erected in a demographically diverse region, stećci are not attributed to any ethnic or religious group and have always been considered enigmatic, lacking a clear, explicit belonging.
The sheer number and dispersed distribution have hampered the scholarship of stećci, confining their understanding to visual information and historical overviews.
