Busovača and Tarasovača are two vitally concomitant katuns in a high-altitude valley at approximately 1400 meters in the southwestern part of the Morine plateau in the Nevesinje municipality, RS, BiH. The area was selected as the focal point for our study on historical pastoral communities due to its geographic isolation, naturally protected pastureland with low vegetation, and two water sources, all of which make it ideal for settlement. The valley has been abandoned during the past century and can only be reached on foot or by an off-road vehicle today.
Our research started in 2023 and archaeological field survey results suggest these two katuns contain a well-preserved record of prehistoric, medieval and post-medieval transhumant practices. Two large anthropogenic stone barrows were discovered at two of the most accessible entrances to the valley, with prehistoric pottery suggesting their prehistoric burial character. Our initial aerial survey revealed drystone enclosures and small one-to-two-room building remains. Next to a path traversing the site, a late medieval or early modern cemetery containing at least 12 graves was also discovered. In addition, local ethnographic reports attest to the continued use of the Morine plateau throughout modern times.
